Pentadyne Flywheel's Back-up Power Performance Helps Local TV News Stay "On the Air" During Hurricane Katrina

Chatsworth, Calif.-October 19, 2005-Pentadyne Power Corporation announced that its advanced flywheel power system, the VSS DC, played a key role in helping a Baton Rouge, Louisiana television station provide uninterrupted, round-the-clock TV news coverage during Hurricane Katrina. As the recent devastating storm passed through the area, power to the local ABC network affiliate's critical broadcast systems remained undisturbed and fully operational with the help of the Pentadyne VSS DC, which ensured the availability of critical back-up power to ride through numerous hurricane-related power outages.

In order to keep the public informed in emergency situations like Katrina, television and radio stations are required by law to continue broadcasting even if grid power is completely lost. Such constraints lead TV stations to operate Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems and back-up power generators.

WBRZ had been experiencing problems with its battery-based UPS system and sought an alternative that could provide a reliable "ride-through to generator" function. In their search for reliable and proven solutions to upgrade their backup-power setup, WBRZ replaced their UPS system and selected the Pentadyne VSS DC to serve as the station's back-up energy storage system. Installed only months before the recent disaster, the Pentadyne VSS DC is used to secure the power to WBRZ's 24-hour news room and corporate data center.

TV networks typically engage their back-up generators well in advance of anticipated storms as a hedge against the sudden catastrophic loss of grid power. However, even after the transition to a back-up generator, broadcast facilities still rely heavily on UPS systems and back-up energy storage systems for conditioning the power supplied to the sensitive equipment they operate. Indeed, even the slightest power disturbance can have a devastating effect on sensitive broadcast equipment.

"My mission is to ensure that our customers can access their favorite programs on our channels day-in day-out" says Clyde Pierce, Director of Engineering & Operations at WBRZ-TV in Baton-Rouge, Louisiana. "I am very pleased with the flawless performance and reliability that the Pentadyne VSS DC demonstrated throughout Hurricane Katrina."

"We are very excited that the VSS DC played such an instrumental role in keeping critical local news coverage on the air for the people of southern Louisiana who were so profoundly impacted by these tragic events" said Flint Craig, President and CEO of Pentadyne Power Corporation.

The Pentadyne VSS DC is a DC Flywheel Power System that provides a stable, reliable, low maintenance, extended-life DC voltage source for UPS systems. The VSS DC can completely eliminate the need for batteries in UPS applications by providing sufficient ride-through for short duration outages or until a standby engine-generator can come on line. When connected to most UPS models, a single VSS DC unit provides sufficient energy and power capability to support loads up to 225 kVA, depending on the back-up time required. Multiple VSS DC units in parallel provide economic ride-through for power levels up to 2 MW.
