Kinetic Energy System Augments or Replaces Batteries in Liebert UPS Products

COLUMBUS, Ohio, October 13, 2004 – Emerson Network Power today introduced the Liebert FS, a flywheel storage system that supplements or replaces battery backup in Liebert uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems.

The Liebert FS is designed to support larger Liebert UPS systems, including the Liebert Npower, Series 300, and Series 610 models. It provides approximately 20 seconds of backup power to ride through short interruptions and enable transition to a backup generator. A single flywheel can be sized to support UPS systems up to 150 kVA. Multiple flywheel systems can operate in parallel to support larger systems.

For many applications, the Liebert FS offers significant advantages over both batteries and competing flywheel systems. Compared to batteries, it reduces environmental impact, lifetime ownership costs, temperature restrictions, maintenance headaches and space requirements. Compared to competing flywheels, the Liebert FS takes up less space, weighs less, spins faster, creates less noise, and requires no bearing maintenance.

The Liebert FS system is a result of Liebert’s partnership with Pentadyne Power Corporation and uses Pentadyne’s patented Voltage Support Solution (VSS) technology. A carbon-glass fiber flywheel is suspended by magnetic force in a vacuum and is rotated at high speeds. During an outage, the flywheel transfers power generated by its momentum to an electric generator.
