CHATSWORTH, Calif., Dec. 21, 2009 – Pentadyne Power Corporation, (www.pentadyne.com) the world leader in flywheel energy storage systems, announced the GTX flywheel has been selected as one of BuildingGreen’s Top-10 products of the year by the editors of Environmental Building News and GreenSpec®. This eighth annual award recognizes the most innovative and exciting green building products added to the GreenSpec® Directory during the past year or covered in Environmental Building News.

“Our selections of the Top-10 Green Building Products represent a wide range of product types in many different application areas,” noted GreenSpec BuildingGreen founder and executive editor Alex Wilson. This year’s list is particularly diverse, ranging from a recycled-content concrete block, to a flywheel energy storage system for data centers, a mobile solar generator for job-site power, and an advanced modular classroom for schools. “Many of the Top-10 products this year have multiple environmental attributes,” said Wilson.

“Pentadyne is honored to have our carbon flywheel energy storage system chosen as one of BuildingGreen’s Top-10 Products. This recognition showcases our flywheel’s green and energy efficient benefits. Just one flywheel eliminates 32,000 lbs of toxic lead and sulfuric acid from a facility, while allowing users to significantly increase back-up power reliability and save money,” stated Jeff Colton, Pentadyne’s Sr. Vice President of Sales and Marketing.

The GTX flywheel provides ride-through power and voltage stabilization for large-scale uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems in facilities such as data centers, hospitals, and casinos. It is designed to provide high power output and energy storage in a compact, self-contained package and offers 25 percent more energy storage than previous models, allowing users to reduce the number of flywheels required. Pentadyne flywheel systems are reliable and environmentally sound alternatives to lead acid batteries which emit greenhouse gasses and dump lead and sulfuric acid into the environment.

BuildingGreen’s Top-10 product selections, as in previous years, are drawn primarily from new additions to the company’s GreenSpec Product Directory. About 200 products have been added to the GreenSpec database during the past year. “New products are being introduced all the time, making it a challenge for our staff to keep up,” said Wilson. The GreenSpec database includes more than 2,100 product listings, representing several times as many actual products.

A big driver in the development of green products continues to be the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED® Rating System (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), which awards points for the use of certain product types or for the energy or water savings that certain green products can achieve. “Designers of LEED buildings are looking for green products, and manufacturers are responding,” said Wilson. In the online version of GreenSpec, users can find products organized by LEED credits.

GreenSpec is the leading national directory of green building products. Products are selected based on criteria developed over the past 17 years. Manufacturers do not pay to be listed in GreenSpec, and neither GreenSpec nor Environmental Building News carry advertising; both are supported by users of the information. “Our policy of not accepting money from product manufacturers allows us to be objective in our review of products,” said Wilson. The GreenSpec product database is also available online as part of BuildingGreen.com.

CHATSWORTH, Calif. –Nov. 19, 2009- Pentadyne Power Corporation, the world leader in flywheel electrical energy storage systems, announced that Pentadyne has recently completed an exclusive Technology License and Transfer Agreement with the UK firm TGT Energy Ltd. to license, acquire and transfer flywheel technology for rail and energy recycling applications. Pentadyne and TGT have been working together since 2007 under a separate agreement and desired to affect a formal transfer of license and technology to Pentadyne.

Pentadyne has acquired the only flywheel system technology proven in wayside rail operations at the New York Metropolitan Transit Authority (NYMTA) and Paris, Lyon, and London Metros. The NYMTA recently tested and successfully demonstrated the technology, now branded PowerBlock™, on a NYC Transit test track on the Far Rockaway line near JFK International Airport. Another Pentadyne PowerBlock™ project is currently underway for the NYMTA’s Long Island Railroad. The NYMTA is North America’s largest transit authority, providing 2.6 billion passenger trips each year —about one in every three users of mass transit in the United States and two-thirds of the nation's rail riders.

The Pentadyne PowerBlock™ flywheel technology is an environmentally responsible carbon-fiber flywheel energy storage system. When connected to the rail power network, the PowerBlock™ system will absorb braking energy from slowing trains and then recycle that energy back for train acceleration. The concept is similar to that used by hybrid cars, but Pentadyne’s hazmat-free flywheel technology is far more rugged and energy efficient than hazardous chemical batteries used in hybrid cars.

CHATSWORTH, Calif. – Oct.1, 2009, Pentadyne Power Corporation (www.pentadyne.com), a world leader in flywheel clean energy storage systems, introduced the next generation in flywheel technology for uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems. The new flywheel, branded GTX, delivers 25% more energy storage than previous models. The 25% increase in energy storage allows UPS customers to reduce the number of flywheels and the cost needed to bridge the gap between utility power losses and transition to a back-up generator system.

“The Pentadyne GTX flywheel technology is unique in that our flywheel operates with no bearings and no vacuum pump, making the GTX flywheel highly reliable and virtually maintenance free. GTX is at least 10X more reliable than lead-acid batteries in delivering the energy needed to support mission-critical loads while engaging the back-up generator system,” said Pentadyne Chief Technical Officer, Claude Kalev.

“The GTX is spectacularly green compared to hazardous lead-acid batteries often used in bridge to generator applications. Our GTX flywheel provides users with the rare opportunity to save money by going green. A Pentadyne GTX flywheel system can pay back in as quickly as 3 years, and then generate substantial savings for each of the remaining 17 years of its life,” said Senior VP of Sales and Marketing, Jeffrey Colton. Lead-acid batteries often need to be replaced every 3 to 4 years and as their name indicates, introduce substantial amounts of the heavy metal lead and sulfuric acid into our environment. The GTX flywheel completely eliminates lead-acid battery environmental damage while saving the end user substantial amounts of money.

GTX is ideally suited for supporting hospital, data center and casino mission critical load applications. The flywheel uses about one quarter of the valuable space that batteries require and can operate in a wide temperature range.

About Pentadyne Power Corporation

Pentadyne is the world’s leading manufacturer of flywheel energy storage systems. Pentadyne products provide ride-through power and voltage stabilization for power quality and power recycling applications. Designed to provide high power output and energy storage in a compact, self contained package, Pentadyne flywheel systems are long lasting, low maintenance, lightweight, and environmentally sound alternatives to other energy storage products.
CHATSWORTH, Calif. -- Pentadyne Power Corporation, a world leader in flywheel energy storage systems, announced that it has achieved a record backlog of new orders, with recent bookings pushing totals to nearly $10 million.

“An important element of Pentadyne’s recent success has been our ability to diversify into new markets, such as the growing mass transit application, where we recently announced a major win in New York City,” said Pentadyne President and CEO Mark McGough. “In addition to this new market penetration in the energy recycling market, extending our leadership in flywheel technology for such applications, we see continued success with multiple repeat orders via our existing UPS sales channels.”

“The superior performance and reliability of our VSS+DC clean energy storage flywheel systems over other competing flywheel designs and other energy storage technologies was the overriding factor in Pentadyne being awarded yet another order for what we believe is the world’s largest flywheel energy storage deployment program,” added Dick Newark, Pentadyne’s Chief Operating Officer.

Pentadyne flywheels store energy kinetically instead of chemically, delivering stable, reliable DC voltage for energy recycling and power continuity applications.
CHATSWORTH, Calif. -- Pentadyne Power Corporation, a world leader in flywheel energy storage systems, announced that the Metropolitan Transit Authority of New York will use Pentadyne as the supplier of a 2.4 megawatt energy recycling system that will be used to capture, store and reuse braking energy of trains on a station of the Long Island Railroad.

The MTA oversees all of New York City’s world-renowned subways, commuter trains and buses. It is North America’s largest transit authority, providing 2.6 billion passenger trips each year — the equivalent of about one in every three users of mass transit in the United States and two-thirds of the nation's rail riders.

The pilot project has major financial support from the New York Power Authority, which selected Pentadyne as the supplier.

The project will involve an array of sustainable, environmentally responsible carbon-fiber flywheel systems that capture and store braking energy from slowing trains, then reuse that energy for acceleration.

The concept is similar to that used by hybrid cars, but the hazmat-free flywheel technology is far more rugged and energy efficient than hazardous chemical batteries used in hybrid cars.

The NYCMTA and NYPA thoroughly evaluated a variety of flywheels, chemical ultracapacitor systems and batteries for this new project. They selected Pentadyne to provide a new and improved high-duty-cycle flywheel system based on a demonstration system that exceeded expectations in extensive NYCMTA tests performed several years ago.

Pentadyne’s new and improved version of the original high-duty-cycle flywheel will capitalize on Pentadyne’s extensive commercial experience in the design and manufacture of highly reliable, safe and energy efficient flywheel technology.

Pentadyne President & CEO Mark McGough cited this new project as a milestone for the company: “This will be our first deployment in the rail market, and we couldn’t be more gratified that the nation’s largest MTA chose Pentadyne for this landmark project. We are confident that this will lead to many other projects with the MTA of New York City and with other electric rail facilities throughout the nation and abroad.”
